Why would anyone want to use the alternative voting system in Britain?
First of all trades union power and influence is as nothing compared with the bankers and big business who contribute to Tories and Labour. Government ministers are routinely “influenced” by the lobbying of multi-nationals and the banking industry to “soften” (i.e. emasculate) legislation supposed to regulate their excesses and/or give subsidies to their activities – like the infamous ‘Export Guarantee Licence’ – and/or award government contracts worth tens or hundreds of millions (even billions). Strangely enough these ministers often find themselves offered lucrative directorships with subsidiaries of those same multi-national companies shortly after standing down from frontline politics. If you want to talk about corruption, the trades union are strictly Vauxhall Conference against big business Champions League; AV will make no difference whatsoever to that (im)balance of power.
