Why Sierra Leone?
According to the United Nations Human Development Index, Sierra Leone is the poorest country in the world, 177th out of the 177 countries profiled (Ireland is fifth). The life expectancy of people born in Sierra Leone is just 41.8 years (in Ireland it is 78.4 years). The adult literary rate is 34.8% and the percentage of people enrolled in school or college is 44.6%. (In Ireland the percentages are 99% and 99.9% respectively). Education in Tonkolili district, where Concern is based, is characterised by a severe lack of appropriate school facilities where 66% of all existing schools in the district were completely destroyed during the civil war. These are in dire need of reconstruction, including the provision of adequate classrooms and teaching/learning materials.
