Why remove parabens?
“Parabens are a group of chemicals used extensively as preservatives in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries” Ms. Mongrain reports. “Parabens are effective preservatives and are used primarily for preventing bacteria and fungus from developing in products. They are commonly found in shampoos, commercial moisturizers, shaving gels, cleansing gels, personal lubricants, topical pharmaceuticals, spray tanning solution and toothpaste and can also used as food additives.” According to Ms. Mongrain, “Numerous studies have resulted in scientific debate and controversy about the use of parabens. The concerns about extensive use of parabens relates to its possible carcinogenic (capable of causing cancer) and estrogenic (acts like estrogen on the body) effects. Public interest organizations, which raise awareness about cosmetic ingredients, believe that further research is necessary to determine the safety of parabens.
