Different people do it for different reasons. Some people want to keep track of who is related to them. Others are looking for lost relatives. I did it because it gave me an opportunity to test my family myth & legend. Others may do it because it may provide insight into a richer heritage (may find someone from a different race/ tribe in the genealogy). In my case, the myth was that I had Muslim ancestors who moved east from Arabia to Northern Iran in the 7th. century. Then, further east to India nearly 800 years ago in the 13 th. century. I always wondered, what were the chances that was true? When I got my DNA tested, I discovered there are very few descendants of my ancestors in India. So, chances were pretty good we were descendants of relatively recent immigrants to India. Then, came the real shocker, I discovered that my ancestors were probably Jews migrating from Bessarabia not Muslims from Arabia! LOL. Now dont you think that it is a good thing for a Muslim to know?
