Why is downloading music/films online illegal but reading books from a library not?

0

You have to return the books to the library; the library paid for the books and lend them out for a certain period of time. And if you’re late you have to pay a daily fine. The music downloaded is not returned. It is kept and the artist loses on royalties.

Because libraries pay fees for the ability to loan out the books – it is paid for from your council tax so technically it is free at the point of use but you have paid for it via a different route.

Not the same thing. Reading a book online is comparable to streaming music or a film not downloading. You are not keeping a copy of the material.
