Why is APA style needed?
APA (American Psychological Association) and MLA (Modern Language Association) styles can be thought of as standards. I’ve always appreciated it when I read a well-researched paper that’s formatted in APA (or MLA) style because it’s easy to navigate, but more importantly it’s easy to find the sources of the paper if you need to–and all of the pertinent information that’s required to find out exactly which page a quote was used, for instance. APA is simply a standard. Example: once USB became a standard, you had one type of port that accepted anything from a mouse, keyboard, GPS, webcam, printer and practically any other peripheral device. USB made it easy for device makers to make devices that could connect to any PC. Similarly, APA is simply a standard. Example: because your instructor requires APA format, she can easily see where each person got his sources from, as well as make sure that the paper isn’t just spewing baseless opinions as actual facts.
