Generic Elavil -Amitriptyline (Tryptomer) is a tricyclic medicine that used to treat insomnia, enuresis, and chronic pain syndromes such as fibromyalgia. Amitriptyline is used to prevent migraines and major depression. Sold also as Endep, Elatrol, Tryptanol, Saroten, Sarotex, Triptyl, Redomex. How should Elavil be used? Patients are usually started on a dose of 5-10mg a day, taken at night to minimise side effects. This dose is gradually increased up to 50-150mg. Elavil side effects The side effects of • dry mouth • blurred vision • constipation • excessive sweating • changes in appetite • drowsiness • difficultly urinating • dizziness • confusion • weight gain • heart rhythm disturbances These effects may occur in up to 50% of patients and elderly patients are at greater risk.
