Why does the LPC hold public hearings?
The LPC receives over eight thousand applications each year from people who wish to make changes to their landmarked properties. Over 90 percent of these are handled by the agency’s professional staff, which uses rules and standards developed by the Commission to determine whether the proposed work is appropriate. The remaining applications must be reviewed by the panel of Commissioners at a public hearing because the work does not qualify for a staff-level permit under the Landmarks Law (or under LPC rules for the particular type of work that is being proposed).
