Why are gems rare?

The breakthrough came when chemists discovered methods for synthesizing gem minerals in the laboratory. These successful experiments revealed that three major factors determine what type of gemstone (if any) will form in a given location: • the available chemical elements • the necessary temperature • the correct pressure.
