Why are employers now asking for a 3-year reference history?
It’s really for two reasons: 1. To check up on your reliability, loyalty, genuineness etc. They want to check you’re the right person for the job and haven’t been lying or anything on your CV or in your interview. They do this by checking all your recent references. If you only had to give them two references, you could pick and choose people who you were still in contact with and you knew would provide you a good reference. Providing all of them for X years ensures you can’t hide things you don’t want them to know about. 2. To find that you really want the job. Employers are making application processes more and more difficult these days to help filter out lazy applicants. It’s not uncommon for some companies to have a 3 or 4 hour online application process to go through. Many people will just say “**** this, I’m not spending hours applying for this job” and not bother.
