Because of the length of time that children spend in schools and day care centers, children face potentially equivalent (if not greater) risks from lead-based paint hazards there as they do at home. Indeed, some children spend more time in a particular classroom or day care room in a given day or week than they might spend in a single room in their homes. If that classroom contains a lead-based paint hazard, the children in it could be at risk. It is important to note that in a school, it is only the rooms in which children under 6 years of age spend time that will be affected by this rule—not the entire school.
