Who was Micah?
Micah is another relatively unknown prophet, though from the book that bears him name we can learn a few things about him. Micah doesn t say much about himself, but the historical references he gives shows that he ministered as a contemporary of Isaiah, Hosea, and Amos. From his geographic references, we learn that he was from Moresheth (1:1), a town some twenty-five miles southwest of Jerusalem1 and so near the Philistine city of Gath that it was also called Moresheth-Gath (1:14), as in a suburb (like the reference to Bethlehem-Judah in Scripture). This little town lay in the Judean foothills, and area known as the shephelah2 (Hebrew for low land), a fertile area between Judah and Philistia. These facts have lead to speculation about Micah s socio-economic status, but truly say no more than that he did not live in a very prestigious commercial center. Also given the fact that Isaiah was the “court prophet” of the day and Amos was the “layman” sent to Israel in the north, Micah was pro
Micah was many things: • He had a child-like innocence. Who else would have had a life long dream of wanting to swim in a bowl of milk and have a zeal for Disney cartoon movies? Micah was a very gifted and competitive athlete. His talent and hustle on the basketball court was a coach’s dream and he was an excellent at bowling. Micah was very disciplined. After becoming frustrated with his natural left-handed basketball shot during a pick-up game in college, he taught himself to shoot right-handed. Micah did not like hair and was always known for having a clean shaven head. Micah loved to teach. Whether if it was math in the classroom, a sport, or Sunday school, he followed this calling. • • Micah loved to proclaim the Gospel and that was a major factor of him getting the ‘Micah 6:8’ tattoo on his right arm. He was many things to many people – an exceptional servant of Christ that displayed the fruits of the spirit like no other. • Micah was born August 4, 1976, at Wilford Hall, Lacklan
Micah was a Hebrew prophet who lived more than 700 years before Christ. He lived after the time of Abraham and Moses and David and Solomon. He lived before the time of Jeremiah and Daniel and Peter and Paul. During the time of Micah the Jewish people were divided into two kingdoms. There was the Southern Kingdom called JUDAH with its capital in Jerusalem and there was the Northern Kingdom called ISRAEL with its capital in Samaria.
Micah was from Moresheth-Gath, a town in southern Judah. He was a younger contemporary of the Prophet Isaiah. Micahs ministry took place from about 750 B.C. to 687 B.C. Micah prophesied during the reigns of three kings in Judah: Jotham, Ahaz and Hezekiah. Deeply concerned with the social ills of his day, Micah spoke out against false prophets, who led the people of Judah into false hopes and errors.
