Who was Frank Lloyd Wright?
Probably the greatest American architect ever! Wright was a visionary in terms of his designs. He believed in functionality of his structures within the landscape. As a result many of the structures he designed have very unique appearances. To complete the "total" effect, Wright often designed furniture and other functional objects to go in the interiors of the buildings/homes he created. Wright was quite prolific and has hundreds of completed projects!
Frank Lloyd Wright lived and worked in Chicago, Illinois, where he developed an architectural style that influenced other architects in the Midwest and throughout the world. This style is called the Prairie Style because of its connection with the open landscape of the Midwest. Wright designed open interiors where the rooms, as open spaces, flowed one into another. This hallway, with its many windows, gives the feeling of such an open space. As a child, Wright spent summers on his uncle’s farm in Wisconsin. He grew to love nature and the materials it provides. Later, when he began designing houses, he used these natural materials and forms to enhance his designs. We can see this connection by looking through the span of windows to the lake and the trees. Wright said, “Architecture is the language of the human heart. I want space to come alive.
