Who supports Open Access?
There is growing support for Open Access around the world. One of the most important organisations is the Open Archives Initiative which develops nteroperability standards that facilitate the dissemination of content in Open Access repositories. In Scotland all the major Universities have signed the Scottish Declaration on Open Access including the University of Stirling. The declaration can be summed up by the opening statement: ‘We believe that the interests of Scotland will be best served by the rapid adoption of open access to scientific and research literature.’ In the UK, JISC (The Joint Information Systems Committee) has developed the FAIR programme (Focus on Access to Institutional Resources) which has been inspired by the success of the Open Archives Initiative (OAI), and is funding research into different mechanisms for the disclosure and sharing of content of a web of resources made available to the whole community of learning.
