Who is St. Valentine?
Saint Valentine was a priest in Rome in the year 269 AD and together with a friend Saint Marius, defied Claudius and performed marriages in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Valentine was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and to have his head cut off. Whilst in prison Valentine fell in love with a young girl who visited him during his confinement. Before St. Valentine’s death on the 14th day of February, it is said that he wrote her a letter signed ” From your Valentine” The history of this patron saint is shrouded in mystery. St. Valentine’s Day contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition.

Saint Valentine (also Valentinus) refers to one of several martyred saints of ancient Rome. The feast of Saint Valentine was formerly celebrated on February 14 by the Roman Catholic Church until a revised calendar was issued in 1969, pursuant to the Second Vatican Council.[2] His feast day is July 30 in the Eastern Orthodox Church. His birth date and birthplace are unknown. Valentine’s name does not occur in the earliest list of Roman martyrs, which was compiled by the Chronographer of 354. The feast of St. Valentine was first decreed in 496 by Pope Gelasius I, who included Valentine among those “… whose names are justly reverenced among men, but whose acts are known only to God.” As Gelasius implied, nothing is known about the lives of any of these martyrs. St Valentine was a Roman who was martyred on 14th Feb 269 AD for refusing to renounce Christianity. The same day had been devoted to love lotteries a ritual under Roman rule. Legend has it that St Valentine left a farewell note to his jailer’s daughter who had become his friend and signed it “From your Valentine”. Over a period of time 14th Feb became the date for exchanging love notes and gifts between lovers.
Saint Valentine (in Latin, Valentinus) is one of several martyred saints of ancient Rome. Of the Saint Valentine whose feast is on 14 February, nothing is known except his name and that he was buried at the Via Flaminia north of Rome on 14 February. It is even uncertain whether the feast of that day celebrates only one saint or two or more saints of the same name. In the Eastern Orthodox Church, Saint Valentine is celebrated on 30 July.
