Who is Sgt Grit?
“In March of 1969, when I got to Danang, Vietnam, I was a green 19 year-old radio operator with the 11th Marines. About that time, the movie, ‘True Grit’ came out with John Wayne, who played the part of an Oklahoma sheriff. A born and bred Okie, naturally, I got stuck with the nickname ‘Grit’. I’d like to say it was because of my John Wayne type persona, but unfortunately, it was only because I was from Oklahoma. As I moved up in rank, Grit moved up with me and I became ‘Sgt Grit’. I was in Vietnam from March, 1969 to October, 1970 and loved it so much, I even extended my tour. When I started this business in 1989, my wife suggested I take back the name, Sgt Grit.
