Maya Rudolph was born on July 27, 1972 in Gainesville, Florida. Maya was the daughter of composer, songwriter and producer Richard Rudolph and soul singer Minnie Riperton who died of breast cancer when Maya was 6. She grew up in Santa Monica and was childhood friends with Gwyneth Paltrow. She went to college in Santa Cruz. She worked with the Groundlings comedy troupe before SNL. Maya was also a keyboardist and backup singer of the band the Rentals.
