Which is the same as the NSDAP?
Both were organizations that were part of the Nazi Party (NSDAP). The SA (Sturm abteilung, ‘storm battalion’) were originally front line activists there to protect Nazi Party election candidates while they were campaigning; this role included the use of violence against political opponents. The SS (Schutzstaffel ‘protective echelon’) began as Hitler’s personal bodyguard. It was NEVER part of the SA, the SS owing its loyalty directly to Hitler himself, rather than the Nazi Party. So, they were both part of the Nazi Party – the NSDAP.After the ‘Night of the Long Knives’ in 1934, when the senior leadership of the SA was purged for political reasons, the role and power of the SS expanded considerably, while that of the SA declined.
