I love the Tahoe City/Kings Beach area. We used to stay in Chinquapin when I was a kid. The property is right on the lake, and there is a private beach. The condos are so cute, with knotty pine ceilings. Plus there is a pool and tennis courts. Ditto on exploring Truckee for a day – what a cute town!
