Where Is Ethane Found?
Ethane ranks as the second-largest constituent of natural gas, after methane. It is also possible to separate ethane from petroleum gas. It is a combination of gaseous hydrocarbons which occurs as a byproduct of refining of petroleum. Most efficiently, ethane can be separated from methane via liquefying the same at cryogenic temperatures. This chemical compound is also observed as a trace component in not only the atmospheres of the four giant planets, but also in that of Titan, Saturn’s moon. A chemical compound, ethane has the chemical formula C2H6. It has the distinction of being the sole two-carbon alkane, specifically, an aliphatic hydrocarbon. It is a colourless and an odourless gas at standard temperature as well as pressure. Ethane is mainly used as petrochemical feedstock intended for ethylene production.
