Chennai used to be known as Madras. At the end of the Indian fiscal year, the Indian goverment decided to change the name of Madras to Chennai. Chennai is the capital of Tamil Nadu state, which is he south-east most state of India. Here’s a map with a pointer. Chennai or Madras, city, southeastern India, capital of Tamil Nādu State, on the Bay of Bengal. One of the principal ports of India, the city has a large artificial harbor from which leather goods, peanuts, and raw cotton are exported.
