Where is AMU headed?
By Staff Writer In the past one week, the media has been continuously focusing on the alleged misappropriation of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) funds and other ‘illegal’ things by the University Vice Chancellor Prof. PK Abdul Azis. First, let us see what exactly the allegations of wrongdoing against him are. Some of the main funds related accusations are – excess TA payment, excessive expenditure of renovating the mob burnt VC lodge, payment of Income Tax of the VC and Registrar from AMU funds, buying furniture from Kerala, furnishing the Registrar’s residence, purchase of cars for the VC’s use, spending crores of rupees on campus security, paying excessive fees to lawyers. Prima facie, the above allegations seem to be frivolous to say the least. Besides, it must be noted that the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG), India’s highest and the most authentic audit body, in its report on AMU’s account for the year 2007-2008 has given it a complete clean chit.
