Where do I put my `init.el/`.emacs file?

`init.el’ is the name of the init file starting with 21.4, and is located in the subdirectory `.xemacs/’ of your home directory. In prior versions, the init file is called `.emacs’ and is located in your home directory. Your home directory under Windows is determined by the `HOME’ environment variable. If this is not set, it defaults to `C:\’. To set this variable, modify `AUTOEXEC.BAT’ under Windows 95/98, or select `Control Panel->System->Advanced->Environment Variables…’ under Windows NT/2000.
