Not sure, but I have heard of birds being bred exclusively for that purpose (for commonly used in costume or decorating feathers like peacock and such). Not sure if this was done in a “humane” manner, but since this was back in the 70’s, I’m guessing not. I don’t think there was the same level of awareness as we have nowadays.
