Your question refers to the “main” name servers, but as there are multiple instances of the A-M servers, you can’t really say that the “main” server is at location X. It is distributed at multiple locations. Up until a few years ago, the heaviest concentration was on the East Coast of the United States. A large number are still in the US, but a lot more are appearing in other countries all the time. The US clearly holds more servers than any other country, but as with all things Internet, country is not really as relevant as geographic location. Combined, Western Europe has more servers than the United States, but no single country in Western Europe has as many as the United States.
