Where are the encyclopedias?
The most current general encyclopedias are located at the beginning of the Reference Shelves, first floor. More specialized subject encyclopedias are usually shelved by call number elsewhere on the Reference Shelves; do a subject keyword search onWebsterto see current holdings. Older encyclopedia volumes kept on the second or third floors may be checked out.
You’re probably thinking of a general encyclopedia like Britannica. But did you know that there are also subject and discipline specific encyclopedias? For instance, there are encyclopedias that only cover religion, or philosophy, or music. For general encyclopedias, such as Encyclopaedia Britannica, check the first aisle of reference collection on the second floor, directly behind the “Biography” section. Or follow the links at the bottom of this page. For subject-specific encyclopedias, come and ask the Reference Desk on the second floor.
