When to use Etching Primer vs. Epoxy Primer?

Hello: I asked the same question before on another forum (Autobodypro.com). And the answer was that etching primer is primarily used on bare metal. Epoxy primers are more versatile; can be used like etching primers, because it also “bites” into the metal. But it’s more durable and can be used over other subtrates like plastics. However, paint doesn’t adhere well to epoxy and one should use a sealer before applying the base coat. I just painted a sport bike. I sprayed the epoxy primer over the tank (from bare metal) and the skins. Ingredients: Southern Polyurethane Epoxy primer Southern Polyurethane Sealer Dupont Chromabase (Chevy yellow 5456) Southern Polyurethane Universal clear Hope that helps.
