You may have a read-only data set, or be in a read-only directory. When you add coordinate system information it is cached locally during that session. Not all coordinate system, projections, datums, and parameters available in ArcCatalog can currently be stored on a raster. The following map projections are currently supported for raster data: Albers, Bonne, Cassini, Eckert IV, Eckert VI, Equidistant, Gall Stereographic, Lambert Azimuthal, Lambert Conformal Conic, Mercator, Miller, Polyconic, Robinson, Sinusoidal, Stateplane, Stereographic, Transverse Mercator, Two Point Equidistant, UTM, and Van der Grinten. User-defined units, Geographic Coordinate Systems, and spheroid parameters are not supported at this time.
