Whats wrong with being a little hypomanic?
An analogous question to this would be “what’s wrong with being a little diabetic?” Certainly there is nothing wrong with having age-appropriate, socially-accepted mood swings in response to life situations: overjoyous feelings with the birth of a child, increased energy and enthusiasm at work when things are going well or after promotion or a raise, or irritability after “burning the midnight oil” to study for college exams. Yet hypomania is more than this. It is a pathological state that is, for the most part, unpredictable and unstable. Hypomania is often immediately preceded by or followed by more intense mood disturbances such as major depression, mania, or mixed states. Even subtle, recurrent mild hypomania can have negative repercussions in one’s life: being unpredictable in mood, energy, or interest, as well as periods of irritability, irresponsibility (sexual, financial, other), and intrusiveness can alienate others within the hypomanic person’s family, social, and occupationa
