First, is cost. The cost of installing optical fibers in natural gas lines is much less than standard methods. The reduced costs are shared with the optical-fiber owner through lower installation cost, and the pipeline owners through payment of a capacity-use fee. You can pass on this lowered cost to end-use telecommunications customers in lower service fees than those of accessing a standard infrastructure.
