What were the sequence of events that caused the Tennessee (2010) flood?
The flood was caused by a foot and a half of rain falling over the Cumberland River valley (which runs through Nashville) and all of that water draining down into the valley forcing the river to flow over its banks. The impact of the flood was the loss of 21 lives, damage to hundreds of homes, and damage to some of Nashville’s most well known landmarks, such as the Grand Ole Opry House, Gaylord Opryland Resort & Convention Center, Opry Mills Mall, Bridgestone Arena, and LP Field. The flood’s damage was increased because of all the expensive building that was done on the floodplain of the river. The flood’s damage was mitigated because of the dams and levees constructed by the Tennessee Valley Authority and U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
