In the 1800s, religion was center to many people’s lives. The Church provided the answers to moral and ethical questions. People married young and had many children. The majority of women stayed at home and men went to work. A stable family was considered one of the major pillars of civilization, and people who had children out-side of wedlock or had sex before marriage were frowned upon. Children were well-bahaved and men and women dressed and acted modestly. People were very communal, as they would always help a neighbor in need. People were also more nationalistic and protective, if someone did a community wrong, it wouldn’t be uncommon for lynch mobs to form. In fact, it was so communal, that people could leave their doors and windows open and have their young children play without supervision outside without nothing bad ever happening.
