The closures are a result of a stakeholder negotiation process (for more information, refer to http://ilmbwww.gov.bc.ca/ilmb/lup/srmp/southern/valemount/downloads/ Valemount_SRMP_stakeholder_agreement_mar12_04.pdf) and a Sustainable Resource Management Plan (SRMP) process that started in fall 2003 and culminated with an approved SRMP in June 2005 (http://ilmbwww.gov.bc.ca/ilmb/lup/srmp/southern/valemount/index.html). Government was responsible for balancing social, economic and environmental interests, as well as other public interests that might not have been included in the stakeholder negotiation process, and reflecting this balance in the final SRMP plan and resulting closure areas.
