Wii is not an abbreviation. It is pronounced ‘wee’ in English and the two i in the name represent two people (or Miis if you prefer) standing next to each other. It also means with the two people, we as in ‘us’. It was going to be called the Nintendo Revolution but it sounded too similar to Xbox 360.
