What non-dairy items contain lactose?
Lactose is sometimes used as a filler in some medications and foods such as cereal and lunch meat. So you do have to read labels. Basically, the more processed the food is, the more you have to look and see what’s in it, because you can no longer just guess. So things in cans and boxes and wrapped in bars, you have to actually check and see what’s in it. How can people treat lactose intolerance? People can buy the lactase enzyme, though it’s not quite as effective as if your own body was making the enzyme. It’s available in liquid form and can be added to food to make it more digestible. People can either pre-treat a jug of milk themselves with the enzyme drops, or they can buy commercially prepared products such as lactose-free milk in the dairy section of most supermarkets or specialty stores. You can also take a lactase supplement in capsule or pill form. For milk, it’s probably better to treat with lactase enzyme or buy already lactose-free milk because all of the lactose is broken
