Its a sonic shock wave. It’s caused by the rapid heating and expansion of the air surrounding and within a bolt of lightning. You see the flash of the lightning first and hear the thunder afterward because light travels faster than sound. What the guy said below is wrong. Lightning does not make “the sound”. Again that is why you see the flash of lightning and then hear the thunder sound.
