What makes people commit sex offenses?
Sex offense, like all human behavior, is very complex and should not be viewed simplistically. In the broadest sense, it happens because people make inappropriate mental associations between sex and other needs. The offender is often very much like everyone else except that he or she lacks the emotional or mental checks and balances to prevent odd or deviant thoughts from finding behavioral expression. It has been found that a large number of offenders were once victimized sexually themselves. It is important to note that recognizing the cause of the behavior does not remove the offender’s responsibility.
