What licenses must general contractors possess?

General contractors need to adhere to different guidelines depending on the state.  Some states are much more relaxed than others.  In Oregon, Washington and California, a course with a minimum number of study hours is requuired and a state test must be passed.  All general contractors must possess a bond and liability insurance within a certian amount.  These amounts change depending on what kind of work the contractor is doing.  Some states also have other licenses such as a lead paint removal license or an employee safety license.

Ultimately it depends on your location so always check with your state before hiring a general contractor.

General contractors must have the State of California General Class B license. Another license is the Home Improvement Contractor (BHIC), which was recently introduced as a requirement of all contractors performing remodeling and other home improvement projects by the California State License Board (CSLB). An additional test must be taken for this license.
