What kind of theory is behind the abstract/concrete terminology?
Actually not much of one. There may be little, for instance, that can be said about “abstract” representations in general. In fact, less loaded terminology, such as “proposed/finalised” or “tentative/final” might be better here. The abstract/concrete distinction may well mean something very different for each level of representation. We don’t really know yet.
