What is Workforce Development?
Workforce development is the process of helping people find jobs that match their skills so that they can move up the career ladder, while at the same time establishing educational and training programs to develop the pool of skilled workers that businesses and industries need in order to compete and succeed. This dual process – finding jobs for people and people for jobs – seeks to foster a prosperous, thriving economy that will benefit everyone. The federal Workforce Investment Act of 1998 provides the framework for a national workforce preparation and employment system. This system is intended to be customer-focused, and to help Americans access the tools they need to manage their careers. The system is also intended to help companies find the skilled workers they need to compete and succeed in business.
