What is Work Study?
Federal Work Study (FWS) is a federally subsidized program designed to give part-time employment to undergraduate and graduate students who need the income to help meet the costs of post secondary education. Work Study jobs can complement your educational program or career goals. You will also gain relevant work experience in a business setting.
The Federal Work Study program is a form of need based financial aid which subsidizes the student’s wages. Students with a Federal Work Study award are eligible for certain student jobs to earn money toward college expenses. Each student who receives approval for Work Study employment will be allocated a certain number of hours that he/she may work (but not exceed) as part of the program. Work Study students receive a paycheck every two weeks, based on the number of hours worked. Because students receive pay directly, Work Study does not credit the term bill.
Work-study is a need-based financial aid award. Work-study employment operates the same way as a normal job, with the following differences: • Income earned from work-study employment does not count as income for the purposes of calculating a student’s financial aid package. The reason for this is that work-study awards are given to help pay for a student’s education in the year in which the award is received, and consequently the government does not expect the student to save any of those funds to pay for subsequent years of education. • Because funds are limited, the amount a student can earn as work-study is finite. The work-study award represents the gross earnings a student earn in a work-study job. • Work-study employers only pay a portion of their employee’s earnings, and financial aid funds pay the other portion. It is a federal job program. Eligible students work a maximum of 20-hours per week on campus and receive a monthly paycheck for the time they work. To be eligible, you must have a completed financial aid file that demonstrates financial need, be enrolled in school, and maintain satisfactory academic progress toward your degree.
