What is Wicca?
Wicca is a contemporary Neo-Pagan religion. In the last few decades, Wicca has spread in part due to its popularity among feminists and others seeking a more woman-positive, earth-based religion. Like most Neo-Pagan spiritualities, Wicca worships the sacred as immanent in nature, drawing much of its inspiration from the pre-Christian religions of Europe.
Wicca is the name of our religion. We are Pagans who respect all religions. Wicca is not an organized or monolithic religion. There is no Wiccan Central. There are many paths and all are valid. The Goddess is Aradia to some, Diana to others, Isis, Lilith, Goddess, Hera, and others to me. Wicca gives us the freedom to make it up as we go along, so long as we follow the Law.
Wicca is a continuation, a revival, or a re-creation of pre-Christian, primarily European, nature religion and spirituality. Most Wiccans agree with one of the following explanations: Wicca is a continuation of a very old religion that has been passed down through families and groups since ancient times. Wicca is a return to or revival of an old, even ancient form of religion. Because not a great deal is known about the original beliefs and practises, contemporary Wiccans must add to the old tradition. Wicca is a new form of spirituality that re-creates very old practices and ideas. The modern form of Wicca began in the 1950’s Put very simply, Wiccans generally agree on two basic principles A belief in an immanent deity (deity is a god/dess): a Wiccans main spiritual goal is to grow in his or hers relationship with divinity. Wicca is the modern revival of the ancient, indigenous, pre-Christian Goddess religions of Europe and the Middle East. It is very similar in its spiritual practices and principles to Native American spirituality, and to that of other indigenous peoples. Wicca is also referred to as Witchcraft, the Old Religion, and the Craft of the Wise. People who practice Wicca are called Wiccans, or Witches. (Male practitioners are also called Wiccans or Witches, never Warlocks.) Wicca is also the fastest growing religion in America. Wicca is a spiritual practice, rather than an abstract belief system. It has more in common with a spiritual practice such as yoga, which provides an individual with her/his own experience of the Sacred, than with Biblical religions, which are based upon faith or belief in a transcendent, male deity.
