What is the Urban Harbors Institute?
The Urban Harbors Institute, founded in 1989 at the University of Massachusetts Boston, is a public policy and scientific research institute dedicated to public service, research, and education. The Institute conducts multidisciplinary research on urban harbor issues ranging from water quality and coastal resource protection, to harbor management, port planning and international coastal zone management. The Institute provides technical assistance and consultation regarding policy formulation to federal, state and local governments, non-profit organizations, private industries, and community groups. The Institute’s findings have been used to influence public policy locally and abroad. ECOS has a close working relationship with the University’s Urban Harbors Institute which enhances opportunities to explore and develop integrated approaches to the solution of coastal environmental problems by utilizing recent advances in both the natural and social sciences on a local, national and inter
