What is the Tyndall effect?

Whenever you can see a beam of light from the side, you are seeing the Tyndall effect. Take laser beams for example. Normally you can only see the end result of a laser beam–the red dot on a wall, but you can’t see it traveling in the space in-between. But as it passes through fog or mist, you can see the trajectory of the beam.
