What is the tuataras third eye used for?
Answer… Native to New Zealand, the tuatara (Sphenodon punctatus) is an ancient lizard-like reptile that has been around for some 200 million years. The tuatara’s third or pineal “eye” is a cluster of light-sensitive cells situated on top of its brain, just below a small hole in the skull. This third “eye” probably serves to regulate the tuatara’s exposure to the sun and thus regulate its body temperature.
