What is the Statue of Liberty?
The Statue of Liberty is a massive statue located on an island near New York City in the United States. It is perhaps one of the most universally recognized symbols of the United States, and numerous replicas of the famous statue can also be found all over the world. People who are interested in visiting the Statue of Liberty can take a ferry to the 12 acre island that it is located on, although they may have to endure security screenings, due to concerns about terrorist threats to the statue. Lady Liberty, as she is sometimes called, is more technically known as La liberté éclairant le monde, or “Liberty enlightening the world.” She was a gift from the French people to the United States in 1886, as a symbol of the friendship forged between the two nations during the American war for independence.
