What is the MSC?
Malaysia has created the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) – a world-first, world-class act – which is a length of greenfield “corridor”, 15 kilometers wide and 50 kilometers long (9 by 30 miles – roughly the size of Singapore) located 30km (20mi) south of the capital. This corridor stretches from the Kuala Lumpur City Center (KLCC) – itself an intelligent precinct – which houses the world’s tallest buildings, down south to the the future federal administrative city Putrajaya and the site of the region’s largest international airport, the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA). The Prime Minister of Malaysia is scheduled to move his office to Putrajaya in June of 1999, and other departments will follow soon thereafter. WHY AN “MSC”? The MSC is an ambitious plan to transform rubber and palm-oil plantations into Southeast Asia’s Silicon Valley bound by a fiber-optics network, providing high-speed computer links between Cyberjaya, Kuala Lumpur, the KLIA and a new administrative capital u
Seafood is important for millions of people. The trouble is, our oceans are being seriously overfished. Unless action is taken some of our favorite fish may disappear from the seafood counter altogether. And it’s not just our supper that’s at stake: overfishing is damaging fishing industries and marine environments around the world. The MSC is an independent, global, non-profit organization which was set up to find a solution to the problem of overfishing. The MSC was first established by Unilever, the world’s largest buyer of seafood, and WWF, the international conservation organization, in 1997. In 1999 they became fully independent from both organizations and today are funded by a wide range of organizations including charitable foundations and corporate organizations around the world. The MSC spent two years developing their environmental standard for sustainable and well-managed fisheries. This standard was put together following worldwide consultation with scientists, fisheries e
Created by Unilever and the WWF (the wildlife one, not the wrestling one) the MSC is a global, non-profit organization which was set up to find a solution to the problem of overfishing. It rewards environmentally responsible fisheries with their distinctive blue product label. So the next time you feel like some beer-battered fish, some nice smoked salmon, or one of over 1,000 certified seafood products worldwide look on the package for the MSC label. That’s all you have to do! Even if you don’t like seafood, the MSC works to ensure that commercial fishing has no impact on the surrounding eco-system through eliminating by-catch. ‘By-catch’ is the industry term for creatures that get caught in fishing nets such as sea turtles, dolphins, small whales and sharks and are killed as a result. While fish may not be particularly cute (have you ever seen a monkfish?), purchasing seafood with an MSC label is like purchasing ‘turtle-free’ seafood. So tell your friends!
