AWOL and desertion are two very different levels of offense. AWOL is temporary. It tends to be a misdemeanor, short absences may result in minor penalties such as loss of future leave, short times in the brig, extra duty, and such. Desertion is a much more serious matter. It’s cowardice, and a crime against your country. It is like a felony. Deserters in war time may be shot, or get very long jail sentences. (I don’t know if that’s current law, but it has severe penalties, at least.) What might be considered AWOL in peace time may be considered desertion when at war. For example, if you are shipped out, and miss the boat, that a very serious AWOL offenses at peace. In war, it is likely to be considered desertion.
