What is the job description of a second level teacher?
Second level teachers are directly employed by the school to teach specific subjects. Teachers are normally required to teach at least one subject to which they have studied to degree level. They may also be required to teach other subjects which they have not studied to degree level but in which they have developed expertise. Second level teachers are also employed by schools to teach to a syllabus which is common to all schools and prepare their students for State Certificate Examinations (visit Department of Education and Science Website for copies of Syllabi at www.education.gov.ie and www.ncca.ie for an overview of curricular structures). Second level teachers prepare and mark students’ homework, monitor students’ progress and communicate such progress at formal parent-teacher meetings and at other informal meetings with parents. Irish teachers do not allocate marks to students as part of their assessment in the State Certificate examinations at the end of Junior and Senior Cycle.
