What is the hardest part about quitting?
The most difficult part is falling out of love with your cigarettes, re-defining what your cigarette means to you, letting go of the romance of smoking comes long after you’ve quit. A thousand times a year I must hear someone, man or woman, say “I’m losing my best friend”, or “Cigarettes have been my lover for so long.” Think about that, then think about your reasons for quitting. Are those reasons consistent with embracing a friend or lover? Realize that no matter how comforting smoking addiction used to be, your “lover” has turned on you, is now stalking you, carrying deadly diseases, social ostracism; it is lying in wait for the right moment to ‘strike’ when you are vulnerable and feel in need. Your cigarette addiction knows you better than you know it. That is where it’s power lies. It knows that one cigarette means the entire addiction back in full force. It surely interferes with the quality of your life now and it will eventually contribute to whatever does kill you.
